Lake House Living

THE DRAWING BOARD-June 2009

A lakeside bungalow undergoes a facelift to accommodate a growing family

Located on Great East Lake in Acton, this 87-year-old camp is undergoing a major renovation and facelift to accommodate the owner’s growing family. Due to the camp’s proximity to the water, very tight volume and square footage constraints have been placed on the structure, making it very important to maximize use of all living space.

ginns-lakeperspect_041409_wThe existing first-floor sunroom has been combined with the existing living room to create a comfortable combination living/dining area with panoramic views to the water. A family room addition is also incorporated into the first floor for watching TV and extending the home’s living space for gatherings. A partially covered exterior deck is accessible from both of these first-floor areas.

A large mudroom/foyer was added providing closet storage and a first-floor bath. An attached covered entry now welcomes guests into this entrance of the home.
On the second floor, a master suite was added, taking advantage of water views, along with a new bathroom and guest bedroom to accommodate additional sleeping quarters.

The basement level, connected to the first and second floor by a new, sun-filled stair tower, ginns-firstfloor_041409_wprovides a recreation and playroom area along with much-needed storage and mechanical space.

The addition was designed to complement the simple details of this bungalow cottage through the use of exposed purlin overhangs, traditional cottage hung windows, and tapered wood columns. The gabled roofs and cedar shingle siding also define the home’s character and charm.
